October 2003 Newsletter Australian Athletes with a Disability The final 2003 Board Meeting of Australian Athletes with a Disability (AAWD) will be held in Sydney on 8 November. The Board plans to approve AAWD's strategic plan and review sport section guidelines and member communication. Wheelchair Sports Australia The Wheelchair Sports Australia (WSA) Annual General Meeting was held the weekend 11-12 October. At the AGM Liz Pollock
after eight years of Board membership, and two terms as Chair, retired
from the Board. Liz who has made a sustained and valuable contribution
to wheelchair sports Australia-wide will fortunately, continue as Deputy
Chair of AAWD. World Wheelchair Games Wheelchair Sports Australia's team to the World Wheelchair Games is currently competing in Christchurch. The team of twenty-four athletes entered in Athletics, Swimming, Lawn Bowls, Cue Sports and Table Tennis began the Games with a parade through central Christchurch on Monday 27 October. On day 1 Australia's Katie Hannay, Ron Gibson and Kelly Darragh were in action on the track. visit www.soccer2003.com.ar The multi disability qualifying times for the 2004 Telstra Australian Championships have been released by Australian Swimming and can be found on their website at http://www.swimming.org.au/content/meets_and_results/community/uploads/P_0083500.pdf The Excell team to the Pan Am Championships are undertaking their final preparations before they depart for Argentina in early December. Tennis David Hall has won his seventh Singles title at the prestigious US Open in San Diego, USA. In the Final, Hall had a first set loss but was able to lift the intensity of his game to come back taking the second and third sets from arch rival and World No. 2 Robin Ammerlaan of the Netherlands with a final score line of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The 2003 title is Hall's fourth consecutive and seventh career title from the past nine US Open Tournaments having also recorded victories in 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001 & 2002.
