AAWD Board Member Profile - Amanda Garland

Born in Kiama on the South Coast of NSW Amanda participated in a number of sports at local, regional and state level whilst at school. In 1971 Amanda's uncle Eric Klein was involved in an accident that left him a paraplegic, not long after his accident he began completing in archery, basketball and athletics. Although at the time Amanda had only just begun her own interest in sports she recalls the commitment and vigor of her uncle as he trained.

After completing school Amanda worked in promotion, travelled to the UK and lived in England for three years and on her return to Australia started a business in promotional management which not long after grew to a marketing management and film production business.

Film Connection specialised in developing marketing campaigns for corporate business and small business, including major events, promotional and public relation strategies, and production management in video and film projects, including music video, community television documentary children's television, corporate video and other projects.

In the past six years Amanda has been working for the NSW public service as a senior officer in the area of public affairs, event management and project manager with the Department of Fair Trading, the Office of Western Sydney and NSW Department for Women. In these positions she has learnt the workings of government in terms of policy making and the role of parliament in decision-making. It has been during this time that she has formalised her skills and has completed a Marketing Management Diploma and is currently completing a Masters in Business Administration.

Amanda is dedicated and passionate about giving back to society and particular groups and communities to help progress their status. For this reason she applied to be on the AAWD Board and is committed to assisting the progress of the organisation for the benefit of members.

Kitakyushu Champions Cup - Noel Rowsell reports the Kitakyushu Champions' Cup held 21-2 of November is to be competed in by four teams Australia, European champions Italy, Japan and Korea. The Rollers, in particular, have gone for a strong development lineup as they begin serious preparations for the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens.

Australian Paralympians Brad Ness, Shaun Groenewegan, David Selby, Campbell Message and Adrian King lead the Rollers lineup and will be joined in the national team by some of the hottest young talent in Australia including Tristan Knowles, Justin Eveson, Shaun Norris, Andrew Flavell, Daryl Taylor, Darren Schutz and Tige Simmons.

This tournament will be an invaluable opportunity for some of the marginal players in the Rollers squad to stake a serious claim for a berth in Athens. The absence of Australian Paralympians Troy Sachs, Brendan Dowler and Grant Mizens from this tour, who might all be currently regarded as front-runners for Athens, offers a rare opportunity for some of the "lesser lights" to shine.

Australian coach Murray Treseder is also missing for this trip and, as a result, Wentworthville League Wheelkings coach Alan Cox will take on the responsibility for guiding the development team through its paces in Japan.

The full Australian team is Brad Ness (WA), Justin Eveson (WA), Shaun Norris (WA), Tristan Knowles (NSW), David Selby (NSW), Shaun Groenewegan (Vic), Andrew Flavell (Vic), Campbell Message (Vic), Darren Schutz (Sth Aust), Daryl Taylor (Sth Aust), Adrian King (Qld), Tige Simmons (Qld), coach Alan Cox (NSW), mechanic Troy Andrews (Sth Aust) and physiotherapist John Camens (Sth Aust).

The Hills Hornets featuring locals Anthea Castelli and Sam Simms finished third equal with the North's Bears. The Encouragement Award presented to a player who sets a good example and displays good sportswoman ship on and off the court was awarded to Emily Tobin from the Queensland Storm.
