2007 - Newsletter Australian Athletes with a Disability Applications have now closed for Australian Athletes with a Disability’s (AAWD) second funding round for 2006-2007. Applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application by early May. South Australia Disabled Sport and Recreation Association With the closure of the South Australia Disabled Sport and Recreation Association, all remaining general funds were transferred to Australian Sports Organisation for the Disabled (ASOD) to administer a grants program to assist athletes who would otherwise have been serviced by the South Australia Disabled Sport and Recreation Association. The pool of funds available is limited and this grants program will cease upon all of the available funds being utilised. In general funding is available to athletes for the following:
Athletes wishing to access any of these funds are to complete the appropriate Funding Application Form and return it to AAWD. For further information or a copy of the application email info@sports.org.au Sport Leadership Grants for Women The Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Government Office for Women have released details of the 2007/08 Sport Leadership Grants for Women. The program is aimed at providing women with an opportunity to undertake certified sport leadership training. This program builds on the grants program offered in the previous 4 years, open to all women in sport. The 2006/07 Sport Leadership Grants for Women offers grants in five key categories: Each category includes the following project areas: For grant application forms and guidelines go to: http://www.ausport.gov.au/women/grants.asp Sports News Wheelchair Basketball NWBL Life Memberships The National Wheelchair Basketball League has announced the following persons were elected as NWBL Life Members at their Annual Council Meeting held in April: Troy Andrew Adelaide Thunder Collectively they could be described as the “Class of 1988”, the year the league started. Three were with the League from 1988 until 2002 when Adelaide withdraw. The remaining five were there at the start and will be back in Season 2007. All of the eight were present in Atlanta in 1996 at the Paralympic Games when Australia won the Gold Medal. Troy, David, Tim and Richard as players. Greg and Ross as referees and Don as a classifier. Graham was part of the Australian support team and was bench side. Head Coach - Rollers Ben Ettridge, the Head Coach of the 2006 National Wheelchair Basketball League (NWBL) Champion Perth Wheelcats, has been named as the Head Coach of the Australian Men’s Wheelchair Team, the Rollers. International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Matt Wells has been named a member of the IWBF Competitions Commission. Members of the Competitions Comission are: President Ron Coppenrtath (NED), Members: Harry Perdikis (GRE), Charles Saunders (RSA) and Matt Wells (AUS). WNWBL Wheelchair Sports Australia (WSA) is pleased to advise the new Women's National Wheelchair Basketball League Advisory Committee has been confirmed. Both Shirley and Peter have extensive experience in Lawn Bowls and were joined by WSA Lawn Bowls Head Coach Jan Palazzi at the Nationals held in Adelaide during April. Nationals
IBD World Championships The WSA team to attend the International Bowls for the Disabled Championships to be held at Harbord and North Manly Bowling & Recreation Clubs in Sydney from Monday 15th October 2007 - Saturday 27th October 2007 will be announced in May. Selection of the WSA team will be predominately based on performance at the Nationals as per WSA’s Lawn Bowls Selection Policy. Rowing The 2007 Rowing Australia National Team Selection Regatta was held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre from Friday 13 April to Sunday 15 April. The Australian Selectors have made the following recommendations to the Rowing Australia Board regarding the National Adaptive Team. Adaptive Mens Single Scull Adaptive Mixed Double Scull Track and Road Australian wheelchair champion Kurt Fearnley has shrugged off the disappointment of a second place in the London marathon last weekend, by defending his 2006 title at the Seoul International Wheelchair Marathon early this morning. Fearnley pushed a personal best time of 1 hour 22 minutes 17 seconds to break the previous course record by nearly three minutes, finishing in front of a group of Japanese athletes and South African rival Ernst van Dyke.
