AAWD
Board Appointment
The Board of AAWD is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Croft
to fill the vacancy left by the retirement last October of Bob Cole.
Paul has a long history of involvement in amputee sport and still
regularly competes in both standing and sitting volleyball. Paul also
has a wealth of experience and knowledge across a range of areas that
will prove beneficial to the Board. We trust you will join us in welcoming
Paul and we look forward to working with him.
2005
Australian Sports Awards
Congratulations to Chris Scott (Cycling), who won the Sportsperson
with a Disability Award at the 2005 Australian Sports Awards.
A five-time Paralympian Chris was unbeaten on both track and road
at the 2005 IPC European Championships. He won gold in the Individual
Pursuit and set a World Record in the 1km Time Trial, while out on
the road he claimed the Road Race and Road Race Time Trial titles.

Paralympic Games
Congratulations to Australia's Winter Paralympic team who achieved
their team target of 2 medals with Silver to Michael Milton and Bronze
to Toby Kane, placing Australia 13th of 39 countries overall. For

Performance Program Criteria
The criteria for inclusion in the Archery High Performance Program
for Athletes with a Disability has now been finalised. If you are

to check it out. 2006 is sure to see another great season of basketball
action, so get along and watch if you can.
Osaka Cup
The Australian men's wheelchair basketball team has won the Silver
Medal at the Osaka Cup in Japan in February. The young Australian
team was impressive throughout the week-long tournament, losing twice
to the current World and Paralympic champions Canada but defeating
host nation Japan and the Peoples Republic of China in impressive
victories. Scores in the tournament were as follows: Canada 60 d Australia
52, Australia 58 d Japan 34, Australia 79 d Peoples Republic of China
30, Grand Final: Canada 61 d Australia 38.
2006 Junior
Wheelchair Basketball National Championships
April 7-12 will see Brisbane play host to the 2006 Junior Wheelchair
Basketball National Championships. Whilst the competition is smaller
than previous years (Qld, NSW, Vic, WA and USA) it will be no less
fierce. Anyone in the Brisbane area during this time should head along
to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre at Boondall. For more information,

2006 Australian Road Cycling Championships
Cycling NSW will be hosting the 2006 National AWD Road Championships.
The AWD Individual Time Trial will be held on Wednesday 03 May 2006
at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith Lakes and the
Road Race will be held on Friday 05 May 2006 at Heffron Park, Maroubra

National Championships
Nominations have now closed for the 2006 Multi Disability Lawn Bowls
Nationals Championships to be held at Darrebin Bowls Club in Melbourne
27 April - 4 May 2006. With 28 entries, there is sure to be some hot
competition on the greens.
Powerlifting
Commonwealth Games
Congratulations to Julie Russell who was appointed as Technical Delegate
for the Powerlifting Competition at the Commonwealth Games. You can

Sailing
Mobility Cup
The Mobility Cup is Canada's annual international regatta for sailors
with a disability. This year's event is held in Vancouver, BC, Sept.
11 - 15, 2006.

Soccer
National Championships
The National Cerebral Palsy Football Championships have been announced
and will be held 15-17 September 2006 at the Sydney Academy of Sport,
Narrabeen. We have received indications from Qld, NSW and (for the
first time) Vic, that they intend to send teams to the Nationals.

Programs
Victoria have advised that they have organized with a local club to

At the recent
NSW Camp held on the 24 - 26 Feb 2006 it was the largest
attended camp since the team first formed in 2001. The NSW team would
like to thank the NSW Sport & Recreation - Disability Unit for
their
ongoing support.
Mainstreaming
The Australian Paralympic Committee and Football Federation Australia
have formed a partnership with a view to advancing the Australian
CP soccer program. The Football Federation Australia have announced
that David Campbell has been appointed as National Team Manager. Coaches
are expected to be appointed shortly.

2006 Telstra National Wheelchair Rugby League
The 2006 Telstra National Wheelchair Rugby League season will tip
off in NSW with round one to be held at the Sydney Academy of Sport,
Narrabeen 26-28 May 2006. For more information, please contact your

We are please to announce the appointment of Angela Mansell to the
position of Personal Care Assistant with the Australian Wheelchair
Rugby team. Angela has a long history of involvement with Wheelchair
Rugby and in working with people with disabilities. We welcome Angela
to the team and are looking forward to her involvement

Wheelchair Rugby BASH
Most of Australia's Wheelchair Rugby players, along with many from
NZ will head to Brisbane for the Wheelchair Rugby BASH 22-24 April
2006. The 'Open" tournament format is unique in Australia and
ensures great clashes all weekend. For more information please contact

Tennis
ParaQuad Tasmania Wheelchair Classic
The 2006 ParaQuad Tasmania Wheelchair Classic was hosted by Tennis
Tasmania 4-5 March 2006.
This event has seen a player increase of over 100% since 2002, with
24 players contesting the event, including 7 of Australian's top 15
Men and the top 3 ranked Australian Women. The women's final saw a
major upset with the number one seeded and Australia's number one
player Alana Duncombe being defeated by in-form Victorian and Australia's
number 3 Nicole Harrison in three sets 0/6,6/4,8/6.
The Men's Draw
produced a more predictable result with all the seeds going through
to the semi finals. Number one seed and world no. 25 Lee Hinson from
the USA playing almost faultless tennis took the title against a slightly
off colour Number two seed and world top 60 Michael Dobbie from Victoria,
6/0,6/1.
