Combined Administration of ASOD, CP-ASRF & WSA

Tanya Cox and Amanda Garland have commenced their appointments on the Combined Administration's Board. Both Tanya and Amanda reside in Sydney and bring a wealth of knowledge to the Board. Amanda has a marketing and small business management background whilst Tanya comes from a finance background and was previously a Director and Chief Operating Officer of NM ROTHSCHILD & SONS (AUSTRALIA) LTD.

Australian Sports Organisation for the Disabled

The 2003 ISOD General Assembly will be held during April in Spain, the main item on the agenda is the amalgamation of ISOD with ISMWSF. ASOD is very much in favour of an amalgamation of the two bodies and will be supporting the proposed joint ISOD / ISMWSF General Assembly to be held later this year in New Zealand.

Wheelchair Sports Australia

After consultation with key stakeholders including the Australian Paralympic Committee it has been decided the coordination of the Australian Team to attend the World Wheelchair Games and ISOD World Athletics Championships will be performed by Wheelchair Sports Australia. The Games will be held in Christchurch, New Zealand from the 25th October to the 2nd November 2003.

The sports involved are: Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Cueball, Fencing, Cycling, Lawn Bowls, Powerlifting, Rugby, Shooting, Swimming and Table Tennis.

Interested athletes are required to complete an Athlete Nomination Form and return it to the Combined Administration's Office by Wednesday 30th April 2003. Athlete nomination forms can be found on the website www.sports.org.au

Date for the diary - the WSA AGM will be held 11-12 October 2003 in Sydney.


Australian Sports Commission
The Australian Sports Commission will be conducting a forum on women in sport to be held in Sydney Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 May 2003.
The ASC is serious about challenging the sports industry to not only attract, but also embrace the benefits of women and girls participation. In particular, the ASC intends to provide leadership and direction to ensure that gender equity is not just a women's issue, rather a sport issue.

Archery

Archers are reminded to forward all FITA Star scores and result sheets from tournaments to the Combined Administration's Office for inclusion in the International Archery Ranking List.
The 2003 Archery Nationals will be held in Queensland during April in conjunction with Archery Australia's Target Nationals, we wish all athletes the very best. It is important to note medals at the Nationals will be based on discipline and not classification.

Basketball

Asia Oceania IWBF is pleased to announce that Wheelchair Sports Victoria, a member Association of Wheelchair Sports Australia Ltd will conduct the Asia Oceania qualifying Tournament from 1st to 9th March 2004.
The venue will be the Dandenong Stadium, Melbourne Victoria, home Stadium of the National Wheelchair Basketball League team, the Dandenong Rangers and of the Dandenong Rangers Basketball Association.
Amsterdam, Netherlands, has been chosen by the IWBF to host the 2006 Gold Cup, the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships for men and women.
"It was a difficult decision as both Amsterdam and Beijing had very good bids but in the end the Executive Council decided by secret ballot to award the Championship to Amsterdam", said Maureen Orchard, IWBF President.
The Gold Cup will bring together the world's top 12 men's and 8 women's Wheelchair Basketball teams from 22 June to 1 July 2006. The last World Championships were held in Kitakyushu, Japan, in 2002. This will be the first time since 1990 that the World Championships will be held in Europe.

The NRMA National League draw for the 2003 season has been finalised. Round one of the League will be held at Bankstown Basketball Stadium in Sydney 3-4 May 2003. In 2003 the League will again include four teams - North's Bears, Hills Hornets, Queensland Storm and VW's.

The NWBL draw has been released and sees play commence the weekend of 14-15 June with the finals being held 26-28 September.

Juniors

Final preparations are under way for the 12th National Junior Games for the Disabled to be held in Adelaide 11-18 April 2003. Since 1981 the Games have been held on a bi-annual basis. In 2003 Western Australia will be looking to win the Best Overall Team Points Shield and the Kevin Bawden Shield as they did in 2001. Will any other state be able to stop them? The Lord's Taverner's Award will be presented at the Junior Nationals in honour of someone who has made outstanding contributions to junior wheelchair sport in Australia. Previous recipients include Sally Salotti and Yvonne Talbott.

The inaugural FESPIC Youth Games will be held in Hong Kong in December 2003 over the Christmas period and will include Athletics, Swimming, Badminton, Boccia and Table Tennis. See http://www.fespicyouthgames.org for further information.

Handcycling

NSW Wheelchair Sports Association will host the 2003 National Handcycling Championships in May. Since the inclusion of handcycling in the Paralympics there has been an increase in the interest in the sport across the country. The 2003 Nationals are supported by Sutherland Cycling Club and Cycling Australia.

Lawn Bowls

Jan Palazzi of DSANT is currently preparing to host the Lawn Bowls Nationals to be held in Darwin 4-14 May. This is the first time the Northern Territory has hosted such an event. Following the Nationals a seven-person team has been entered in the Arafura Games to compete against able-bodied bowlers from throughout Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Swimming

After the success of the trip to the Spanish Nationals the Excell Committee are preparing to send a team of swimmers to the Chinese Paralympic National Games to be held in China during September, these Games will provide a great opportunity for our developing and emerging swimmers to gain valuable international experience.

Wheelchair Rugby

Terry Vinyard will be inducted into the US Quad Rugby Association Hall of Fame during the US Nationals in April. Congratulations Terry!

The National Wheelchair Rugby League will kick off in Melbourne in May and in 2003 includes a final series to be held in Sydney during September.

In state news Canberra 2 have taken the lead in the NSW State Rugby League after round 2. UWS Bankstown is currently in second place, narrowly in front of Canberra 1 and Port Macquarie.
