the year with its first visit to the popular North Queensland Games.
Over the Easter break, athletes from Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and

The
State championships in Brisbane saw fierce competitive play from the
Queensland players, which included Mackay, the Capricornia area, Gold
Coast, Redcliffe, Brisbane, and the Redlands. Successful players will
represent Queensland at the 2006 Boccia National Championships in
Perth, where selectors will watch players and choose a team to represent

Canada
Cup
The Australian Wheelchair Rugby team finished a close 4th (behind
USA, NZ, Canada) in the recent Canada Cup. For the Australian team,
using this tournament as a lead-up to World Championships in New Zealand
in September, its performance was an indicator that it is on the right
track to regaining its form from 2000. According to Team Manager Kim
Ellwood, the team proved to themselves and the rest of the world that
they are serious contenders for Gold in September.
2006
Telstra National Wheelchair Rugby League
The 2006 Telstra National Wheelchair Rugby League tipped off in Sydney
26-28 May 2006. The first round of the league showed that this year

from the weekend unscathed, with each experiencing at least one loss.
The battles were hard fought with six of the 12 matches played being
won by 3 goals or less. With the National Championship on the line
as well as spots in Australia's World Championships team up for grabs
the close battles are sure to continue at round 2 in Adelaide 14-16
July 2006. For full results of round 1, visit http://www.sports.org.au/docs/Results.pdf

Swimming
Excell
Squad
Earlier this month
the Excell Committee decided to disband their squad based on the information
provided to the Excell Committee by Swimming Australia.
Swimming Australia
are proposing / have started to move more into the area of developing
swimmers and are currently establishing squads in each State and Territory
and are also proposing activities in other fields such as coaching
and athlete identification that the Excell Committee focused on. To
avoid the duplication of services and in the move towards "mainstreaming"
the Excell Committee have made the decision to disband the Excell
Squad.
The Excell Squads
have provided a much-needed service to swimmers with a disability
over the years, which can be attributed to the work of the Excell
Committee, which AAWD is grateful for. It is an exciting time for
swimmers with a disability and it is hoped the plans of Swimming Australia
are a success for many years to come.
Current Excell
Squad members have been advised of this decision.
