In the fifth and deciding match of the five game annual competition, Australia won 38-34 in front of a supportive Cairns crowd. It was the seventh time the two nations have competed in the Chris Handy Cup, with the tally now standing at 4-3 in favour of Australia. "We had a score to settle after they beat us twice in May," said Australian Team Head Coach, Terry Vinyard. "New Zealand will be in our pool in Athens so it was important to have a good result against them." All five matches were very close, with one going into overtime.
