The Board of AAWD has reviewed its funding guidelines for 2006-2007. The AAWD Office will distribute information regarding the application process in August.

Basketball

Gold Cup
The Wheelchair Basketball World Championships (Gold Cup) took place in Amsterdam in July. The Rollers placed third and the Gliders finished fourth. Canada won both the men's and women's competition with the USA taking silver in both.

Congratulations must go to Shaun Norris (WA) of the Rollers and Kylie Gauci (NSW) of the Gliders who were both named in the All Star Five after the completion of the Championships.

NWBL
Noel Rowsell reports Colin Price has joined the Razorbacks while Patrick Anderson has joined the Brisbane Spinning Bullets. It is believed Anderson, the undisputed superstar of international wheelchair basketball, will undoubtedly lift the Spinning Bullets out the competition cellar.

WNWBL
The third weekend of the Women's National Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL) was played in Brisbane over the weekend of 5-6 August, with the Hills Hornets recording four victories to move into second spot on the competition ladder. The Hornets defeated the Queensland Comets 49-35 and the Western Stars 51-45 on Saturday, then followed up with a 52-50 win over the Western Stars and a last-minute 53-52 win over Queensland Comets on Sunday.

The Hornets will now play the North's Bears and the Queensland Comets in a three-team playoff series in Sydney the weekend of 1-3 September.

2008 National Junior Wheelchair Basketball Championships
The Board of Wheelchair Sports Australia is pleased to announce that Wheelchair Sports WA will be the host of the 2008 National Junior Wheelchair Basketball Championships. Congratulations WA!

Boccia

The 2006 Boccia National Championships in Perth were a great success with
teams from QLD, NSW, VIC, WA & NZ competing. An undefeated QLD team won Gold. Next year Boccia Australia hopes to welcome Tasmania and South Australia to the Championships being held in Melbourne. An international team of nine is presently preparing to compete at FESPIC in November.

Cue Sports

WSA will not be conducting a Cue Sports National Championships in 2006 as the Australian Eight Ball Federation will for the first time this year include a division for athletes with a disability at their National Championships. This event will be held in the Northern Territory from 11 October - 21 October. This decision by WSA supports the principle of mainstreaming. The next training camp will be held on the 22nd to 24th September 2006. The team for FESPIC will be named after that camp. The FESPIC Games is scheduled for the 18th Nov - 2 Dec 2006 in Kuala Lumpa, Malaysia.

The National CP Football Championships will be held on the 15th - 17th September at the Sydney Academy of Sport, Wakehurst Parkway, Narrabeen, NSW. The draw will be announced as soon as all teams are finalised

2006 Telstra National Wheelchair Rugby League
Round two of the Telstra National Wheelchair Rugby League was held in Adelaide from 14-16 July. NSW came away with six wins out of six games to be on top of the ladder followed by QLD, VIC and SA. For full results visit www.sports.org.au/newsletters/docs/NWRL%20Rnd%202%20Results.pdf

2006 Chris Handy Cup
In another very close Chris Handy Cup series, New Zealand defeated Australia 3 matches to 2 to retain their hold on the trophy. The Australian team pushed the World Number 1 ranked Kiwis hard all the way, with very tight games earmarking the tournament and with the series being decided in the final match.

Australian Team Coach Evan Bennett was pleased with the performance of the Australian team noting that the team is definitely on the improve with each game being played at great pace, with close scoring and either team could have won at any time.

The next competition stop for the Australian team is the World Championships to be played in Christchurch, NZ, from the 7-17 September.

NSW Hall of Champions
Congratulations to Greg Smith who was inducted into the NSW Hall of Champions at the State Sports Centre on August 9. Three other athletes inducted at the same time were Todd Woodbridge (Tennis), Steve Mortimer (Rugby League) and Steve Waugh (Cricket). Louise Sauvage made the presentations and Jim O'Brien, CEO of WSA NSW, accepted the award on Greg's behalf. Well done Greg!
