Australian Athletes with a Disability Ltd
Applications are now open for Australian Athletes with a Disability's second and final round of funding for 2004-05. Applications close Friday 18 March 2005. Please note funding applications must be endorsed by Wheelchair Sports Australia, Australian Sports Organisation for the Disabled or Cerebral Palsy - Australian Sport Recreation Federation.
AAWD is currently seeking applications for the position of Executive Officer for a 12-month term. Interested applicants should contact AAWD for further information.


SPORTS NEWS


Archery

The Wheelchair Sports Australia Archery National Championships will be held in conjunction with the 58th Australian Archery Championships 2nd - 9th April 2005, Melbourne, Victoria. To be hosted by Archery Victoria Inc. & Diamond Valley archers.

The IPC have just accepted Italy's bid to host the IPC World Championships for 2005. They will be held from 24th September to 4th October 2005. No bids for the 2007 Championships have been received to date.

Basketball

- Osaka Cup

Australia finished a credible second behind Canada at the Osaka Cup and three of the team's members were named in the tournaments All Star Five Andrew Flavell, Shaun Norris & Tristan Knowles.

- U23 Selection Camp

A selection camp will be held from Friday 4 March - Sunday 6 March at the Sydney Academy of Sport Narrabeen for the U23 team to attend the Asia Oceania Zone Qualifying Tournament to be held in Malaysia from 28 March - 2 April.

- Referee Appointments

The Wheelchair Basketball Australia Technical Committee has made the following referee appointments for the first half of the year.

Nigel Wiggins - IWBF Asia Oceania JQT in Malaysia

Barry Spicer - 4 Nations Tournament in Great Britain.

Boccia

The Boccia National Championships will be held from 7-10 July 2005 at the Northern Beaches Indoor Centre, Sydney, NSW.

Fencing

A number of Fencing World Cups will be held over the next twelve months including:

- 29 April - 1 May 2005 in Montreal, Canada
- 20-22 May 2005 in Lonato, Italy
- 24-27 November 2005 in Paris, France

Handcycling

The Handcycling Nationals will be held March 12-13 2005 in Perth, visit www.handcycling.org.au for further information.

Powerlifting

Queensland Sporting Wheelies will host the IPC Powerlifting Nationals to be held in Brisbane on 19 March 2005.

Swimming

The Excell Committee intends to send a team to the USA National Paralympic Championships to be held in Portland during July 2005. It is anticipated a team of 10-12 swimmers together with 3-4 staff members will attend the Championships. Additional information regarding the competition can be found at www.usparalympics.org including entry standards or by contacting the AAWD Office.

Table Tennis

Table Tennis Australia has announced the 2005 Athletes with a Disability National Championships for classes 1-11 will be held in Homebush, NSW from Friday 5 August - Sunday 7 August 2005.

Tennis

- The Australian Wheelchair Tennis Open

Sydney's David Hall won his ninth Australian Wheelchair Tennis Open, defeating Robin Ammerlaan 5-7 6-3 6-3 at Melbourne Park. Hall, retained his world No.1 ranking after pulling out a 19 career victory over his regular Dutch challenger on the wheelchair circuit.
The women's title was won by top seed Sharon Walraven, who used her experience on the tour to quell the challenge of fellow Dutch player Korie Homan, just 18 and playing in her first Super Series final.
Australian Michael Esler won the junior singles final, defeating fellow Aussie and friend Heath Davidson 6-0 6-0.
- Junior Camp
Twelve players and three coaches representing Australia, New Zealand and Singapore took part in the Cruyff Foundation International Junior Wheelchair Tennis Camp for the Oceania/Asia region, which was held at Caloundra Tennis Club in Queensland, Australia from 21 - 25 January.
Led by Australian National Coach Greg Crump, the Camp was a great success, with the strongest field of players assembled at an Oceania/Asia Camp yet.

Volleyball
Australia has been invited to participate in the AOCVD Men Sitting Volleyball Qualification Tournament to be held in Tehran, I. R. Iran from 21 to 28 April 2005.
