DRUGS
IN SPORT
On 23 June 2005, the Australian Government announced the establishment
of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA). Please find
below a link to a media release from Senator the Hon Rod Kemp, Minister
for the Arts and Sport issued in relation to the introduction of the
Legislation for ASADA. http://www.minister.dcita.gov.au/kemp/media/media_releases/new_anti-doping_body_legislation_introduced
A reminder also
that the 2006 Prohibited List (released by WADA on 28 September 2005)
comes into effect on 1 January 2006. A link to the 2006 list is available
on the ASDA page of the AAWD website.
In short, there
are four areas of change:
oHuman chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) and Luteinizing (LH) are now
only banned in males.
oA number of glucocorticosteroids no longer require an ATUE for their
use.
oSeveral stimulants have been added to the 'out of competition' monitoring
program. Caffeine and pseudoephedrine remain on the 'in competition'
monitoring program.
oThere have been several changes in "Substances prohibited in
particular sports" in relation to alcohol and beta blockers.
Each sporting
organisation/athlete will need to check the 2006 List changes to see
how this affects them. Please advise your athletes where relevant.

Oceania Zonal Championships
The Australian team have returned from the 2005 Oceania Zonal Championships
held in South Africa. The World Number 1 New Zealand team had to fight
hard and through 3 overtime periods before finally beating the Aussies
by just 1 goal. Though disappointed with the loss, this result, after
only three months at the helm, has pleased coach Evan Bennett and
signs are looking good as the team now looks towards the World Championships
next September.
Special congratulations
must go to individual award winners:
Ryley Batt: MVP
and Best in Class 3.5
Scott Vitale: Best in Class 1.5
Naz Erdem: Best in Class 0.5
