Australian Athletes with a Disability

The Combined Administration of ASOD, CP-ASRF & WSA has become the "Australian Athletes with a Disability." This new name replaces the temporary name "Combined Administration of ASOD, CP-ASRF & WSA" which was only ever to be used until a new entity was created and new website is http://www.sports.org.au/ .

Wheelchair Sports Australia

Yung Huynh reports the South Australia Wheelchair Sports Association Annual Awards Night held in November was spectacular. The winners from the night were:
  • Junior Athlete of the Year: Matthew Cowdrey (Swimming)
  • Kevin Bawden Encouragement Award: Cathy Vluggen (Bowls)
  • Most Improved Athlete of the Year: Ryan Scott (Rugby)
  • Service to Sports: Joy Horne (Basketball)
  • Most Outstanding Female Athlete: Libby Kosmala (shooting)
  • Most Outstanding Male Athlete: George Charlesworth (Bowls)
    At the NSW Wheelchair Sports Association Presentation Dinner the following awards were presented:
    • Team of the Year Winner: World Team Cup Junior Tennis
    • (Ben Weekes, Jerry Markoja & Thomas Laing)
    • Coach of the Year: Garry Croker
    • Rookie of the Year: Eliza Stankovic
    • Volunteer of the Year: Linda Ross
    • Athlete of the Year: David Hall

Australian Paralympic Committee
Darren Peters, widely regarded as one of Australia's leading sport managers, has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Paralympic Committee, taking up the role in December 2002.
In announcing the appointment, Australian Paralympic Committee President Greg Hartung, welcomed Darren to the position confident he will provide effective leadership to the organisation and meet the challenges ahead.


Australian Sports Commission

The Australian Sports Commission are calling for nominations for the 2003 Ausport Awards. The 2003 Ausport Awards will recognise, reward and showcase good practice in the Australian sports system. The Ausport Awards are now open for nominations. A nomination Kit is now available online at www.activeaustralia.org/events/awards.htm

The inaugural 2003 Ausport Awards (formerly the Active Australia Awards) will acknowledge and reward individuals, clubs, community organisations, schools, local government authorities, national and state sporting organisations for demonstrating their commitment to good practice in sport, greater grass roots participation, innovative and inclusive programs, quality sports business management and excellence in sport performance.

The Presentation of the Awards will take place on Friday, 14 March 2003 at the Our Sporting Future Forum in Melbourne. Nominations Close 16 December 2002.

Australian Sports Drug Agency

The first draft of Level 2 of the World Anti Doping Code has been released and is available at the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) website http://www.wada-ama.org. This level of the Code includes Testing Standards, the rationale and approach to developing the WADA List of Prohibited Substances for 2004, WADC Therapeutic Use Standard and WADC Laboratory Accreditation Requirements and Operating Standards.

FESPIC Games

Australia finished 7th on the overall Medal Table with 17 Gold, 17 Silver and 10 Bronze - a total of 44 medals from five of the nine sports contested.

New Zealand National Multisport Championships

Paralympics New Zealand has released information regarding their National Multisport Championships to be held 7-9 March 2003 in Auckland. Sports to be contested include: archery, athletics, boccia, equestrian, goalball, lawn bowls, powerlifting, swimming, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis. Archery
The South Queensland Archery Society is hosting the 2003 National Target and Field Archery Championships at the Belmont Shooting Complex, Brisbane in April and May, 2003. For further details visit http://www.archerysqas.com/nationals2003/index.html.

Athletics
The Olympic Dream has again been run and won with NSW athletes Kurt Fearnley and Louise Sauvage being 1st Male and Female athletes across the line.
In tough conditions with a strong wind and warm sunshine Kurt produced an outstanding effort to finish in 22.13. Victoria's Fred Periac was not far behind in 23.03 and this was enough to clinch him the overall title in the Open Male category of the Grand Prix Series.

Basketball
Osaka Cup - The NWBL, on behalf of the WSA Basketball Section, has accepted an invitation from the City of Osaka Japan to take a National Men's team to the International Wheelchair Basketball Friendship Games, the OSAKA CUP.

The team will be coached by APC National men's Coach Murray Treseder while the assistant coach and staff will be selected from the NWBL. The team will play Japan, Korea and Canada in a round-robin tournament. The top two teams will play for the final game and the other two will play a consolation final.

The APC National Men's program was invited in to the project to create further training and selection opportunities for their program. Coach Treseder will select the team with assistance from the NWBL Executive Committee.

2003 NWBL Finals - Queensland Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association and the Brisbane Spinning Bullets will host the 2003 NWBL Final Series at the Sports Centre of the Brisbane Entertainment Centre September 26th-28th 2003.

Gliders Head Coach - The APC have announced Gerry Hewson as the Head Coach for the Australian Women's Wheelchair Basketball team. Gerry has been an assistant coach with the program over the last 18 months. Prior to this time Gerry was a long-standing member of the Australian Men's Wheelchair Basketball program including the Gold Medal team of the 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games. Congratulations to Gerry on his appointment.

2003 NRMA National League - In great news for women's wheelchair basketball NRMA Insurance has been confirmed as the naming rights sponsor of the 2003 National Wheelchair Basketball League and associate sponsor of the 2003 National Club Championships. Avon has also been confirmed as the associate sponsor of the 2003 National League and the naming rights sponsor of the 2003 National Club Championships.

Boccia
The Boccia Association of New Zealand have invited Australia, Korea, Malaysia and Hong Kong to attend the 2003 New Zealand Boccia Championships in Christchurch during August 2003. This is seen as a great opportunity for the national teams of all five countries to have six days of top boccia in preparation of the 2003 Boccia World Cup to be played in October 2003.

Juniors
Head Coaches Evan Bennett and Barry Barker have finalised their program for the Junior Wheelchair Basketball Camp to be held in January. A total of twenty athletes will be attending the camp in Narrabeen, NSW.

Powerlifting
Darren Gardiner (100 kg class) lifted a National Powerlifting Record of 230kg at the QLD IPC Powerlifting Competition in November. Congratulations Darren!

Rugby
US National League - Australian National team players Brad Dubberley and Patrick Ryan who both just completed successful League seasons in Australia have landed in America to play in the US National League. Dubberley will be play for the Phoenix Heat and should gain valuable experience with a complete season. Patrick Ryan will make his U.S. debut with the Carolina Crash who are based in Charlotte North Carolina. Charlotte, who finished 6th in Division 2, is hoping the addition of Patrick will propel them to a better finish and a possible Division 1 appearance. Oceania Championships - The IWRF have announced Japan will be the hosts of the 2003 Oceania Championships from September 2 - 9.

David Hall has recently arrived back in Australia from the 2002 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters where his victory has secured the World No. 1 ranking and 2002 World Wheelchair Champion crown.
