Commonwealth
Games
Congratulations
to all 29 EAD athletes who competed at last month's Commonwealth Games.
Between them they collected 9 of the 36 EAD medals on offer (4 Gold,
2 Silver, 3 Bronze). Swimmer Matthew Cowdrey, who finished with two
gold medals and two world records in the men's 50m and 100m EAD freestyle
events, led the EAD performances. Matt was also the only individual
male swimmer of Australian swim team to collect gold. Other gold medallists
were on the track at the MCG in the Athletics competition - Lisa McIntosh
won the women's T37 class over 100m and Heath Francis won the Men's
T46 class in the 200m.
The two EAD silver medals also came from the track, with Katrina Webb
finishing behind Lisa in the T37 100m and Eliza Stankovic achieving
her first major international podium finish in the women's 800m T54
wheelchair class.
The three EAD
bronze medals were spread among three sports. At the pool, Annabelle
Williams finished third in the Women's 50m freestyle, Asti Poole collected
bronze in the women's seated shot put and the final bronze medal went
to Darren Gardiner in the men's open powerlifting event.
There were also
plenty of finalists in all three above sports and some promising results
in Table Tennis.

Wild
West Handcycling Tour
From the 15th to the 19th of March, 40 competitors from all four corners
of the globe, competed in the inaugural Wild West Handcycling tour
in Perth. Over five days of racing, competitors covered a distance
of 165 kilometres and some clear winners arose with the shine of a
gold jersey glistening in their eyes.
WA's Craig Parsons
claimed the jersey over Rastislav Turecek and Rowan Bowles in the
A division. There was a large contingency of B division riders on
the tour, however, it was taken out by Czech Republic's Marcel Pipek,
but was pushed all the way by Radovan Civis and WA boy Peter Allen.
The equally large C1 division was a battle for first position all
week between Elmar Sternath and WA's golden boy Nigel Barley. Sternarth
eventually took the victory by a mere three minutes. In the C2 division,
an astounding pace was set for every leg of the tour by USA cyclist
Alejandro Albor, followed by Austria's Markus Schmoll and Holland's
Johan Reekers. In the women's F division, Monique Van Der Vorst won
convincingly with WA's Nu Nguygen-Thi, finishing second. For a full
list of results click http://www.sports.org.au/newsletters/news50.html
