Fearnley triumphs in Osaka
9:12pm AEST, 1 September 2007.
Australian Wheelchair athlete Kurt Fearnley has added to Australia's golden results at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Osaka with a win in the 1500m demonstration race.
Fearnley edged local hero Soejima Masazumi by 0.3 of a second in a time of 3:26.30, with Switzerland's Marcel Hug a further 0.1of a second behind.
In a slow, tactical race, Fearnley stayed patient throughout before leaving the field in his wake with 100m to go.
Fearnley said "It's great to finally win one of these demonstration races. I went close in Athens, but couldn't quite get there so to get this one is special".
Fearnley now gets back on the road, attempting to retain various titles in the UK before finishing his year at the ING New York Marathon title, a race he won for the first time in 2006.
