Perth Wheelcats Win World Club Championships
(Wheelchair Basketball)

The CFMEU Perth Wheelcats have crowned off a perfect 2007 by winning the world club championships in Japan on Sunday with a hard fought 61-55 victory over Santa Lucia from Italy in the gold medal game.

The Wheelcats easily accounted for the Chiba Hawks from Japan earlier in the day with a 66-46 win in the final group game, with all of the team playing good minutes throughout the game, allowing the starting
5 a good rest before the big game.

The gold medal game started well for the undefeated Wheelcats as they led 23-18 at quarter time, thanks mainly to strong work from Brad Ness who tallied 10 points for the term.

Tight defence from both teams was the order for the rest of the game and scoring proved very difficult. The Italians through everything at the Cats and on several occasions got to within 2 points, however never took the lead in what was a very physical game.

Justin Eveson again proved the star for the Cats with 29 points against his old team, while Brad Ness finished with 15 and Shaun Norris 13.

The victory has given the Cats an amazing perfect 19-0 win/loss record for 2007, which includes the National Wheelchair Basketball League and finals series, victory against the touring Great Britain team, as well as the world club championships.
