swimmingSwimming is one of Australia’s favorite sports and leisure activities and occupies a unique place in the national identity.

Disciplines include Freestyle, Backstroke, Butterfly, Breaststroke and Medley events. Male and females of all abilities are able to participate and compete. Distances vary according to the athlete classification and the event.

The International Swimming Federation (FINA) rules are followed with some modifications, such as optional platform or in-water starts and consideration given when performing the swimming strokes. There are opportunities to participate and compete at all levels from your local club up to the Australian Championships.

Paralympic swimmers to show their Class in 2010
20-Jan: Swimming Australia has long been at the forefront of change in the sport and 2010 is set to be no different for our Paralympians with integration into national and state swim meets now a given, Swimmers with a Disability or SWD are on the dawn of a new era.

Classifications

Classification in swimming places swimmers of similar ability or function into groups for the purpose of competition and is the only system that combines different disability types across classes. Swimming classes are sorted into five groups; functional impairment, vision impairment, intellectual impairment, hearing impairment and also transplant recipients.
